A GUIDE TO THE
USE OF THE HAWLEY-FORM

All Hawley-Form appliances have anterior rotation bars that extend halfway down the crowns of the anterior teeth in order to squeeze the incisors both labially and lingually(fig. 5). This pressure insures that rotational corrections are properly maintained. If the retainer is lost or not worn for a period of time and relapse occurs, the Hawley-Form is capable of returning the rotated incisors back to their optimal positions. (Some active daytime exercise may be necessary). The imbedded lingual wire in the "E" and "A" appliance versions can be expanded or constricted to alter the entire posterior arch width or to individually alter specific areas such as across the canines or molars in either the maxilla or mandible (fig. 6). |
The unique upper lingual tab in the "A" version forces the mandible to be positioned anteriorly in order to properly retain corrected overjets by just wearing the upper Hawley-Form by itself (fig. 7a).
If larger mandibular advancements are to be made, the upper Hawley-Form "A" can be used simultaneously with either lower Hawley-Form "R" or "E" in order to prevent any adverse labialization of the lower incisors (fig. 7b).
The upper lingual tab is textured to receive liner on its labially-directed surface in order to customize its fit to the mandibular lingual tissue in the mouth (or to the lower Hawley-Form retainer). |

There are two ways to customize the fit of the Hawley-Form. the first and quickest way is to insert the appliance with the liner directly in the mouth at the chairside (fig. 8). The second way is to customize the Hawley-Form directly on the plaster model of the patient's mouth (fig. 8b).

Remove and trim the excess material form the margins. Any sharp, fragile spicules should be snipped off with a ligature cutter or scissor. Don not remove these spicules completely, however, since they hold the appliance in place.
The advantage of this lining method is that it is a better way in individuals that have gingival recession with extensive undercuts and in mixed dentition cases where there are limited undercuts.

The following procedure is recommended for lining The Hawley-Form on a model:
|
Total Elapsed Time (MIN:SEC) |
1. Paint
the textured posterior surfaces of the Hawley-Form
with 2 coats of primer (fig. 12a).![]() |
||
| 2. Check the fit of the Hawley-Form appliance in the mouth in the same manner as outlined previously. | |||
| 3. Coat the plaster model with separating model, being careful no to heavily plug up the interproximal undercuts. | |||
4.
Dispense the powder into the 2nd marking of the measuring
tube (fig. 12b) and pour into the mixing cup.![]() |

Spatulate the powder and liquid for 30 seconds. (fig. 12d)![]() |
||
| 0:30 | 7. Immediately smear the mixed plastic into the interproximal undercuts and around the posterior teeth on the model. | ||
| 2:00 | 8. Le the remainder of the plastic in the mixing cup stand for 1 minute and 30 seconds. | ||
| 2:00 | 9. Load
the Hawley-Form
appliance with liner on both sides of the textured posterior
areas (fig. 13a).![]() |
||
| 2:00 | 10.
Insert onto the plaster model (fig. 13b).![]() |
||
| 8:30 | 11. Hold the appliance in place for 6 minutes and 30 seconds in the same way as described above. | ||
12. While
the plastic is still in its doughy state, cut the excess
material off around the margins of the Hawley-Form
with a plaster knife (fig. 14a). This saves considerable
trimming of the set plastic.

The Hawley-Form "A" upper appliance is used in cases that require overjet retention or mandibular advancement. If only the Hawley-Form "A" upper appliance is used, lining the lingual tab of the device is recommended to achieve a better fit to the tissues of the lower arch and should be done directly in the mouth. To prevent the upper Hawley-Form with the lingual tab from being dislodged by the mandible, the upper anterior segment may have to be lined to increase the retention to the dentition in this area.
